Steampunk Halloween 2015

Adam spent the last six+ weeks designing and creating our 2015 Halloween costumes.

We got to wear the finished products at TechShop’s Halloween Party on October 22nd!

With a theme of “steampunk,” Adam and I worked together to conceptualize the two costumes, and Adam did the lion’s share of the actually rendering of the different costume designs on software and then the construction using the laser cutter and by hand finishing (painting, gluing, rub ‘n’ buffing, sewing, etc.)

This post will have a lot of pictures to be organized in three sections:

  1. Adam’s Costume
  2. Katy’s Costume
  3. Adam and Katy Together

Adam’s Costume

Adam1
Adam handmade his hat and goggles completely from scratch

Adam2
Adam sewed his suede vest from a leather jacket we found at Goodwill; he adapted the elements to suit the steampunk theme, including rub ‘n’ buffing the buttons to turn them bronze

Adam3
We were excited about Adam’s bow tie as the red, gold, and blue elements pulled together the color theme on his costume

Adam4
Incredible attention to detail on Adam’s goggles, which he built from foam, contact cement, acrylic paint, acrylic for the lenses, and rub ‘n’buff

Adam5
With the anthropomorphic welding machine at TechShop

Ready to work!

Adam8
We found this vintage leather briefcase at a Neighborhood Sale in Point Breeze and snapped it up for $2

Adam9
Adam designed the gears on the back of his vest and then cut them out with the laser cutter. He then rub ‘n’ buffed them in copper and silver and hand-sewed them to his vest

PocketWatch
Pocket watch designed and constructed by Adam. Wood, acrylic, rub ‘n’ buff, and stainless steel

Katy’s Costume

Katy0
My full costume with my much-loved Doc Martin silver studded high heels

Katy1
Helping Adam build his steam-powered zeppelin

Katy2
Adam completely designed my goggles from scratch and built them to fit my face perfectly

Katy3
We bought my hat at Target, and then I rub ‘n’ buffed it silver

Katy5
Feeling steampunk-y!

Katy4
Loving my goggles!!
